Future Scenario workshop – Sale and Service – self-checkouts

On March 9th, 2023, AUTOWORK hosted a Future Workshop wherein grocery store workers and customers were invited to explore the implications of digitalisation and automation on the work life of grocery store employees. This workshop was predicated on research conducted by Anita Stovner, a master’s student who collaborated with AUTOWORK for her thesis.

During the workshop, AUTOWORK posed inquiries to participants regarding the future landscape of grocery shopping. Questions encompassed topics such as the desirability of replacing human workers in grocery stores, the requisite knowledge and attributes for future grocery store operations, and ideal scenarios for the shopping experience.

The findings revealed a spectrum of perspectives among participants. Some advocated for the elimination of workers due to the perceived stress of being monitored, while others emphasised the importance of interpersonal relationships with store staff. By engaging participants in these discussions, AUTOWORK aimed to glean insights into their perspectives while fostering critical thinking about a routine aspect of many people’s weekly lives.
